Setting Up Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

Dial Up Networking Settings

1. Go to My Computer> Dialup Networking - follow the prompts to set up an initial phone book entry if you have not already done so.

2. From the Dialup Networking box, click on 'More' and select 'Edit Entry and Modem Properties'.

3. In the 'Basic' tab, make sure the phone number and modem are correct. Now click 'Configure'.

4. Choose the appropriate port speed for your modem. Enable the hardware flow control. At this time, disable the modem error control and the modem compression. You may wish to experiment with these two settings later to increase the performance of your modem. Click on 'OK' and you're back to the Edit Entry box.

5. Click on the 'Server' tab. The dial-up server type should be 'PPP: Windows NT, Windows 95, Internet'. The only Network Protocol that should be enabled is 'TCP/IP'. Enable the software compression, but disable the PPP LCP extensions.

6. Now click on 'TCP/IP Settings'. Enable 'Server assigned IP address'. Make sure 'specify name server addresses' is checked. Your primary DNS should be 208.210.86.2 and the secondary is 208.210.86.3 The primary and secondary WINS should be all zeros. 'Use default gateway on remote network' should be checked.

7. Now click on the 'Script' tab. The 'After dialing login' option you should choose at this time is 'None'. You may experiment with writing your own script later.

8. Click on the 'Security' tab. Click on 'Accept any authentication including clear text'. You should not make any changes in the 'X25' tab. Now click on 'OK' to return to the Dialup Networking box. At this time, you can click on the 'More' button and select 'User Preferences' and 'Logon Preferences' to make changes in those areas - generally, the default settings will be appropriate.
